This spectacle of blasphemy of the Cross of Christ is found in the "Torture Chambers" map of the Jail unit of Quake II. In this map are two cell blocks housing imprisoned Marines. The player is to use holes in the floor of some cells in one unit to gain access to a flooded conduit. On the other end of the swim is this room.
As you can see, two guards are stationed here (at higher skill levels, this number will likely be greater).
These are known in the game as Light Guards, the lowest level of enemy in Quake II. The Super Shotgun you see trained on him in this capture will make hamburger out of him with only one blast. The problem isn't the difficulty of the monster, but this seemingly little obstacle.
When you get out of the water to enter this chamber, you have no cover to conceal your entry. This gives the guard on the left of the first picture plenty of time to activate this console:
This console starts the crushing cross on its way upward to crush the poor Marine strapped to the wall.
Here's a look from a frontal angle:
Is it possible to save this poor soldier from this death? Yes and no. Yes, if you come up out of the water close to the console with, say the super shotgun drawn, you can kill the one closest to the console and have time left to destroy the other guard(s) before they can activate the console. You can save the Marine from being crushed by a Strogg, but there is a catch. After the Marine gets crushed by this cross, a security pass materializes.
The only other way you can obtain this security pass outside of crushing the Marine with the cross press is to use cheat codes through the console. And you will need this security pass to open this door:
On the other side of this door is the entrance to the "boss" level of the jailhouse unit. A boss is an unusually strong, difficult to kill creature that is usually the last monster you kill at a specific level.
Before you get to the Torture Chambers map, you go through some more holding cells where Marines are kept. In fact it's where you first see these poor tortured souls. One cell stands out for the obvious reasons:
My super shotgun gets in the way, but there are two Marines lying on the floor in this cell. Two on the floor, and one crucified in their midst. Wonder where they got the idea for that?
There is a crucifixion scene in the Quake 3 Demo. However I must say that the graphics are a lot more horrible than the previous ones.
I am not trying to force you to look here! I am trying to be responsible here! Again, if you or someone else watching with you is squeamish, or if there is a youngster there who would be better off not seeing gory imagery, either evacuate them or leave this page by using the arrow!
Okay, you have been warned! But before we look let's pray!
Heavenly Father we pray that you would bless the viewer of this page with spiritual insight into this present evil world. Father lift any spiritual barriers that might cloud, glorify, or distort the view of these wicked images. And Lord, if anyone is here that shouldn't be viewing these images, Lord I pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ that you would somehow intervene and stop their journey. Lord, you know my heart and why I do this, so I ask you to please bless, in Jesus name, Amen ans Amen!
In the Demo version of Quake 3 Arena, there are four maps. One of them is called the Temple of Retribution. In one room there is a plate that activates a grate in the floor. This grates opens up to allow passage into a floor beneath the floor of this room. Here you'll find some health power-ups, some ammo and this grisly sight:
That thing that is on the wall is indeed a man. Or what is left of him. He is flanked on the sides by two skull torches. The red thing that you see floating in front of the body is a suit of heavy armor. Here is a closer look at this scene minus the armor. WARNING! You're about to see just how grisly this scene is!
I warned you that this would be very ugly! Here we see cracks in the floor, and what appears to be a bed of lava (or something that looks very hot!) beneath. It looks like this to me folks:
Here is a mockery of Christ on the cross ( Isaiah 52:14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:), and the blood atonement (why would this protective armor be colored RED?!?!?!), and a vision of Hell fire beneath him.
And did you notice what the armor was floating above? Why, bless your soul, it's a stinkin' PENTAGRAM! Well now....
